🎼 Early Life

Umm Kulthum was born Fatima Ibrahim al‑Sayyid al‑Beltagi in the village of Tamay al‑Zahayra, Egypt, most likely on 31 December 1898, though some records list 1904. Her father was a village imam who sang religious songs at weddings to support the family. She learned to sing by imitating his recitations and performing with him—often dressed as a boy because public singing by girls was frowned upon.

🌆 Rise to Fame

In the early 1920s, the family moved to Cairo, where Umm Kulthum’s career flourished. She studied music, poetry, and etiquette to refine her style and soon became one of the best‑paid performers in Cairo by the late 1920s.

Her first recordings appeared in the mid‑1920s, and by the 1930s she was a national sensation, performing in theaters, salons, and on Egyptian radio.

🎤 Her Singing Style

Umm Kulthum possessed a powerful contralto voice, unmatched in emotional depth, control, and improvisational ability. Key features of her singing include:
